Mission Australia’s Family and Carer Mental Health Program has a variety of education groups and workshops on offer in first semester 2018.
These education programs can assist MH carers to build strategies for self-care, increase their knowledge about mental illnesses, learn from the experiences of other carers and much more.
STRENGTHS-BASED COMMUNICATION FOR CARERS
This interactive workshop explores the strengths-based approach in the context of communication. When we are experiencing challenges in our caring relationships we can default to a deficit frame of mind. This workshop assists carers with reframing personality traits and challenges using strengths based perspective. Carers will have the chance to practice new strategies in a supportive environment.
UNDERSTANDING SELF CARE FOR CARERS
Self- care for Mental Health Carers is very important. This workshop provides carers with the opportunity to reflect on their needs, strengths and values. These components are very important when writing up a self-care plan which will occur during this workshop. The impacts of stress on the brain and body are explored along with strategies for self-care.
STEPPING OFF THE MERRY GO ROUND
Communicating with someone who is unwell can be challenging. How do we keep a healthy relationship between family members so that everyone is treated with respect? This workshop will explore ways to stay connected and communicate constructively when relationships are strained.
BUILDING RESILIENCE WITH CARERS
Resilience for Carers’ is a great opportunity for those who attend to explore their self-care strategies and the importance of resilience. Resilience building as a concept will be unpacked and explored with the intention to inspire. Resilience is paramount for the longevity of caring as it is what is needed in times of crisis, ongoing management and coping. Resilience can also support carers to move beyond a sense of surviving and into thriving.
MINDFULNESS AND CULTIVATING STRENGTHS
Everyone has strengths and the potential to develop them to be the best they can be. The reason strengths are so important is that everybody is at their most fulfilled and happiest when they are using the best parts of themselves, or their individual strengths. A daily mindfulness practice can enhance our strengths and help us to build or cultivate new ones. This workshop will explore all of the above.
CULTIVATING HOPE IN LOSS AND GRIEF
This interactive workshop is designed to offer carers the opportunity to reflect on the emotional experience of loss and grief through their caring role. It also places great emphasis on the importance of developing and maintaining hope. This workshop draws on a wonderful resource written by Carers Australia ‘An Unrecognised Grief-a Carer’s Guide’.
This workshop is designed to support carers with developing healthy boundaries by identifying what is already working and what they would like to be different in their lives. Basic Assertiveness and communication skills are taught in this session. This is a great workshop for any carer who is feeling overwhelmed and burnt out.
